The Benefits of Instructional Design

When we talk of training, most people associate it with Training delivery. But there is more to training. In order to deliver an effective instruction, the planning that goes behind it matters. This is where Instructional Design comes in.

What makes knowledge and skill acquisition more efficient and effective when using Instructional Design is its own process. It consists of understanding the current needs and level of the learners, setting a clear goal of what the learners should be able to do as a result of the training, determining which activities would work best, and which assessments will test the achievement of these goals. Instructional Design addresses the gap between the current performance based on knowledge and skills and the expected learning outcome.

Let’s see the benefits of using Instructional Design:

Focus

An instructional designer is guided by the learning goals, which become the focus of the training. He or she can modify his or her approach by analyzing the performance requirements and providing an environment that replicates this situation to increase workplace application.

Efficiency

Due to the above, the training is optimized. Training time will be spent learning what is significant in filling performance gaps and acquiring skills. Unnecessary information or activities will be dismissed to give way to courses that would help learners be more efficient at their job.

Engagement

Instructional Design uses adult learning principles to involve learners and customize the methodologies to their needs and knowledge level. Instead of the traditional lecture, participative methods help retain knowledge and develop the required skills.

The instructional designer is like an architect providing a blueprint that serves as the foundation of an effective learning approach. With an instructionally sound program, the instructional designer will be able to achieve focus, efficiency and engagement, thus getting results on the job and maximizing his or her investment.
